DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - Two days after announcing a $1.5 billion deal to buy the operator of Colorado’s Winter Park and Steamboat ski areas, a joint venture of Aspen Skiing Co. and Denver-based private equity firm KSL Capital Partners LLC said today it will buy several California ski resorts, including the sprawling Mammoth Mountain resort near Yosemite National Park.
It's yet another sign of the biggest players in Colorado skiing getting even bigger through acquisitions — and another business challenge for top dog Vail Resorts Inc.
The partners’ unnamed “new entity” is acquiring Mammoth Resorts, which also owns June Mountain near Mammoth as well as the Snow Summit and Bear Mountain ski areas near San Bernardino, California, which Mammoth Resorts acquired in 2014, KSL said in an announcement.
The four resorts host a combined 2 million annual skier visits a year, their owner says. The deal also includes several lodges and a pair of golf courses near the ski areas.
