DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - Dish Network Corp. continues to spend billions of dollars acquiring wireless internet frequencies. The satellite TV company has been revealed as the second-largest buyer in an auction of broadcast TV airwaves.
The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday announced the winners of spectrum licenses from its auction over the last several months. In the auction, local TV station owners were encouraged to sell airwaves they don’t need or no longer plan to use to companies wanting the frequencies for wireless internet services.
Bidders spent $19.8 billion in the auction, the FCC said Thursday. Douglas County-based Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) accounted for 31 percent of the total.
ParkerB.com Wireless LLC, a legal entity registered by Dish executives to the company's headquarters address in Douglas County, placed winning bids for 486 licenses around the country, spending $6.2 billion.
