Google revamps app store in bid to keep up with changing habits

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has some different challenges with its Play mobile app store than Apple does with its own App Store, but it appears Google is following Apple’s footsteps with several changes aimed at helping app developers’ businesses.

According to a Reuters report, the Google Play store accommodates a wider range of products than Apple’s store and logs more activity, but Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) still generates more profit. So Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), with an eye on helping developers, now is opening its Play store to more forms of payments, including in some parts of the world direct carrier billing, in which charges are routed through a customer’s mobile carrier. The company also is applying new forms of artificial intelligence to improve app store recommendations, Reuters said.
