Jeff Bezos is spending $1 billion a year to take tourists to space in 2018

DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos on Wednesday unveiled his space company Blue Origin LLC’s new capsule to take tourists to the edge of space as soon as next year, part of an effort into which he’s pouring $1 billion of his own wealth annually.

Sporting a leather jacket and aviator sunglasses in the bright Colorado sun, Bezos stood out at the 33rd Space Symposium international military space conference here, which attracted 13,000 people — mostly in military uniforms and business suits.

What also stood out was the towering Blue Origin rocket booster outside the Broadmoor Hotel’s conference hall — smudged and scarred from being flown four or five times — and the mockup of the gleaming New Shepard capsule built to carry as many as six tourists 62 miles up for a few minutes of weightlessness.
