Looking beyond Bed Bath & Beyond at Cherry Creek shopping center

DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - Cherry Creek Shopping Center is on the hunt for a new a tenant after Bed Bath & Beyond announced it was leaving the upscale shopping center and moving to nearby Glendale.

"It wasn't a surprise that the lease was coming up," said Nick LeMasters, general manager of the Cherry Creek Shopping Center. "The surprise was Sports Authority bankruptcy -- it presented a new opportunity for them. I am assuming they were able to secure terms better than we were offering."

A spokeswoman for Bed Bath and Beyond would not say if the lease at the new location was better, only that the store was moving and would open in the 44,000 square-foot former Sports Authority store at 370 S. Colorado Blvd in Glendale in late 2017.

Englewood-based Sports Authority was the biggest sporting-goods retailer in the nation and one of Colorado's best-known business brands, with hundreds of stores spanning the nation and 14,000 employees. It occupied more than 1.1 million square feet of real estate in metro Denver, including retail, warehousing and office space. The company filed for bankruptcy in March.
