Study suggests Uber, Lyft still can't fully shake driver discrimination

DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - Uber and Lyft’s hailing models lead to longer wait times for black riders, according to a study(PDF) by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and the University of Washington.

The study, conducted in Seattle and Boston, surveyed results from about 1,500 rides. Four black and four white research assistants (a 50/50 split of men and women) ordered rides during a six-week period in Seattle. Each used their own photos on the Uber and Lyft apps. In the Boston-based test, researchers "whose appearance allowed them to plausibly travel as a passenger of either race," booked rides, except they used either "African American sounding" or "white sounding" names.

The researchers discovered Uber drivers canceled on riders with black-sounding names a disproportionate number of times. Researchers also observed that drivers took longer to accept ride requests from black men on both services in Seattle. Total wait times were equal for both races on Lyft, but Uber’s total wait times were longer for black men.
