DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - United Airlines' latest passenger scuffle caught national attention, but it isn’t the only time the airline has recently used threatening tactics to remove a passenger from a plane.
United customer Geoff Fearns told Los Angeles Times columnist David Lazarus on Tuesday that United threatened to put him in handcuffs last week if he didn’t surrender his first-class seat to a "higher priority" passenger.
Fearns — president of Irvine, California-based TriPacific Capital Advisors — was returning from a conference in Hawaii and purchased a full-fare first-class ticket from Kauai to Los Angeles for $1,000. Fearns told Lazarus that he had already boarded and was awaiting takeoff when a United employee told him that he had to give up his seat for a higher-priority customer.
“I understand you might bump people because a flight is full,” Fearns told Lazarus. “But they didn’t say anything at the gate. I was already in the seat. And now they were telling me I had no choice. They said they’d put me in 'cuffs if they had to.”
