9NEWS Intern Program

  • We have a limited number of internships available and priority will be given to college juniors and seniors. Please note that our internships are unpaid and you must be receiving college credit. Internships will begin in late January and continue until late May.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A 9NEWS INTERNSHIP
General Internship
Number: 3 internships available
Time: 16-24 hours per week

As an intern in the News department, you will be exposed to many different areas of our news operation. You will have the opportunity to increase your knowledge about day to day news gathering and production.

There are specific skills and requirements for interns to accomplish in the intern program at 9NEWS. Each intern will rotate through different areas including writing, assignment desk, producing, editing, photography, reporting, directing and engineering.

You will then have an opportunity to specialize in the area that interests you most.

You will also learn how to work with the ENPS newsroom computer system, researching on the Internet, and other database research tools. You will learn to log field tapes and story production techniques. Your writing and fact gathering skills will be enhanced. In general, this internship is a comprehensive overview in a working newsroom.

You should be a self-starter and self-manager. This internship is a 16-24 hours/week commitment. We generally break that into 8 hour shifts, two-three days a week.
Sports Internship
Number: 2 internships available
Time: 16-24 hours per week

The sports intern must have a passion and thorough understanding of all sports.

Duties will include, but are not limited to monitoring and "logging" incoming game feeds, accompanying crews in the field including Broncos, Rockies, high school and college assignments.

The intern will assist reporters and anchors with information gathering using newsroom computer system (AvidNews), telephone and Internet.

He/she will also help with viewer calls and questions. The intern will also learn how to edit highlights for regularly scheduled newscasts and sports specials.
Weather Internship
Number: 1 internship available
Time: 16-24 hours per week

The weather internship program is designed for students planning and preparing for a job in broadcast meteorology. Weather interns will have the opportunity to prepare forecasts, create weather graphics, research climate data, and learn about the broadcast meteorology field. Interns can expect to learn the basics of our WSI TruVu Max, Titan, Prism, and Alert systems.

Duties include assisting the meteorologists in their preparations for the next weathercast, assisting with viewer phone calls and e-mails, preparing daily forecasts for our radio and newspaper partners, and assisting with creating content for our digital platforms.

Candidates should be highly motivated, have excellent communication skills, and have the ability to learn quickly. This internship is 6-8 hours per day up to three days per week.
Digital Media Internship
Number: 1 internship available
Time: 16-24 hours a week

A Digital Media Intern will learn how social media and online communities are integrated into the Networks of 9NEWS. The Digital Media Internship is designed for a student who wants to understand every aspect of social media strategy and use.

The Digital Media Intern will learn:
  1. How to track social media efforts.
  2. How to develop Facebook applications.
  3. How to host and moderate web chats.
  4. How to develop a social media strategy.
The Digital Media Intern duties include, but are not limited to:
  1. Monitoring and working with various social media sites, including but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Foursquare, Livestream, Delicious and StumbleUpon.
  2. Writing copy for Facebook and Twitter.
  3. Working with 9NEWS.com Web Producers
  4. Taking pictures or shooting video to be posted on social networks.
  5. Brainstorming new uses for existing or new social networks.
This internship is for the passionate, curious, and bold student who is already using social media and understands that it is more than just posting on Facebook or sending a Tweet.
Community Internship
Number: 1 internship available
Time: 21-30 hours a week

We provide internship opportunities to college or university students interested in learning more about community relations and the media. Internship schedules vary with each student but must fall within Monday through Friday and anytime from 8am until 5pm. Internship is not paid. Students are required to receive academic credit for internship.

To apply for internship, please submit a resume and a cover letter. The cover letter needs to include the student's definition for community and an explanation on how they fit into their community. Student's should also explore one community issue and provide a suggestion on how to improve the situation.

Main responsibilities:

Tours

Station tours are an important part of our public relations effort. Scheduling and giving these tours will be the primary responsibility for department interns.

Phone lines

A dedicated and advertised phone line provides information to the public on a variety of station programs. Interns are responsible for checking and handling messages left on this phone line.

Current events

The community relations department works on a variety of projects throughout the year. Interns will be asked to work on current programs, doing research, planning, attending meetings, general office and organizing activities.
Promotions Internship
Number: One internship available
Time: Negotiable with minimum 16 hour weekly commitment

The Promotions Department Intern will apply existing university-based production skills in a thriving, creatively rich and nurturing environment. Intern will fully participate in the creative process, conceiving, pitching and producing a variety of promotions across a range of platforms for the Networks of 9NEWS.

Intern will learn and apply specialized skills to the department. Intern will hone production abilities in the edit suite, graphics stations and on-location video shoots. Intern will participate in a wide variety of promotion duties, including, but not limited to:
  1. Brainstorming ideas for a variety of promotion needs across a variety of platforms
  2. Writing scripts for client, event and image promotions
  3. Assisting in the production of spots including camera and lighting set-up
  4. Post-production editing on the Avid Adrenaline non-linear editing system
This internship is for creative people wanting to learn skills to contribute real results in a fast-paced, intensively competitive television environment. The internship experience is dependent on the depth of your commitment and ability.
Sales Internship
Time: Minimum 16 hours a week to include a Wednesday morning

An intern in the 9News Sales Department will be a great learning experience for a student studying in the areas of advertising, sales, public relations, or marketing. Some of the opportunities for a sales intern are:
  1. Attend weekly sales meeting
  2. Shadow account executives on sales calls
  3. Review and track Nielson ratings and sales research with Research Manager
  4. Assist in gathering research for sales presentation materials (quantitative and qualitative)
  5. Shadow/assist sales production crew
  6. Introduction to Television Sales specific software to access Nielsen Ratings and Research
  7. Work with Sales Development Team on presentations and promotions for clients
The sales intern will have the opportunity to develop skills to work in a fast-paced and high energy sales department. Intern should be a self-starter and self-manager.
