Three-wheeled car sells for under $7K

KUSA - What has two seats, three wheels and gets 84 miles to the gallon?

Phoenix-based Elio Motors wants to revolutionize U.S. roads with its tiny Elio. What is really driving sales is the cars price which has a starting price of only $6,800. There are currently almost 30,000 of the cars on order.

They'll start making the cars next fall at a former General Motors plant in Shreveport, La. They will be sold at Elio stores in 60 U.S. markets and serviced by Pep Boys. It's not known if Denver will have a dealership.

Because it has three wheels, the U.S. government classifies the Elio as a motorcycle. But Elio Motors co-founder Paul Elio says it doesn't drive like one.

"It's really fun to drive. You don't realize how awkward it is sitting off-center in a vehicle until you get to drive right between the wheels," Paul Elio said.

The little car has a top speed of over 100 mph. It goes 0-60 in under 9.6 seconds. It will have a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty and has a safety management system that includes three airbags, a reinforced roll-cage and anti-lock brakes.

Most of the pre-orders are from older more affluent buyers who want a second or third car for commuting. A lot of millennials are showing interest as well.
