85-year-old woman makes history

DENVER - Sunday a journey will end for nearly 1,000 Metro State college students. However, in the fall class of 2008, there's one person who will walk across the stage and make history.

At age 85, Winifred Jennings will be the oldest Metro State graduate ever.

"I don't believe I did it," said Jennings during a graduation party Saturday evening in Aurora.

Jennings meant to finish college a long time ago. She went to Columbia University for a year in 1941, until life threw her a curveball.

"When the war ended and all the boys came home and I got married and had a family. That was the end of my education," said Jennings.

That is until her husband died and this grandmother of 16 made up her mind to go back to school.

The Behavioral Science major took two courses at a time and slowly reached her goal.

"Finally it is done! I guess we're done. Eight year program, now nine year program," laughs Jennings' son George McCarron.

Don't count on Jennings using her degree anytime soon. She's happy enough to just have the diploma.

"Oh gosh no! No way," said Jennings, when asked if she'd look for a job.

Despite her milestone accomplishment, Jennings says she isn't done with her education yet. She plans to get her Masters Degree after taking a six-month vacation.
