The Elbert County Sheriff's Office says the plane went down south of Highway 86 and County Road 125 around 1:05 p.m. It's about 20 miles east of Kiowa.

When deputies and fire and rescue crews from Simla and Kiowa got to the scene, they found the single-engine plane fully engulfed in flames.

The sheriff's office has been in contact with the NTSB and the FAA in Denver who have investigators heading to the scene.

The sheriff's office says one person has died, but they are not releasing the person's identity.
