Fall funnel cloud spotted
|
KUSA - A cold core funnel cloud was spotted near Akron Thursday morning. ![]() Heather Schafer with the Washington County Ambulance Service sent 9NEWS a photo of the funnel taken around 10:30 a.m. The National Weather Service reports no damage from the funnel and only light rain in the area. Meteorologist Becky Ditchfield says this funnel cloud is actually called a cold core or cold Air funnel that is different from the variety we see during severe weather season. Becky says funnel clouds and tornadoes that form during the spring and summer months typically form in moist, warm air environments where there is a lot of energy and more lift in the atmosphere. Cold core funnels usually form in cooler, more stable environments. Occasionally within non-severe storms you can get a tightly wrapped rush of rising air that may appear as a funnel. Since the system is cooler and more stable, these cold core funnels are very weak and rarely touch the ground. (Copyright KUSA*TV, All Rights Reserved)
