The Arvada Police Department says residents reported that safety gates did not activate at intersections as the rail car raced by. As a result, the police department was left scrambling, trying to close intersections before the box car approached.

The car started in unincorporated Jefferson County and stayed on the Burlington Northern Lines until it reached 60th and Federal where it crashed.

Burlington Northern says gates will not activate if a car is running outside of normal parameters. The normal speed limit is 20 miles per hour.

The car eventually derailed, crashing through a bridge and into an embankment. As a result, the Colorado Department of Transportation is responding to the scene.
