Attempt at world record much more than going for a title

KUSA - Sometimes only the people involved in going for a record care about the cause.

This week in Denver, a man tried to break the record in the number of tattoos done in 24 hours.

Friday, Freaky's tattoo artist Scotty Savell tried to beat the current record of 801.

"Definitely been taking a lot of preparation in the past two months getting all this put together," he said. "Have a lot of support from friends, family, different artists in the industry."

The other part of Savell's quest is to raise money for cancer research. The tattoos he was doing were cancer ribbons.

"It's a way for us to kind of give back, give back to people that have had problems with loved ones," Savell said.

Stephanie Hardy and seven of her girlfriends drove two and a half hours, from the Nebraska state line to get their tattoos.

"We all actually came for a different reason," Hardy said. "I lost my brother to cancer, so I chose to come in honor of my brother."

"Something like that, it changes your life, it changes everything surrounding your life, your family," Savell said. "I definitely think if there is a way to help out in any way, we're more than happy to do that."

Savell fell short of breaking the record. His hand cramped Saturday morning and he was able to finish 275 tattoos.

But the event still raised thousands of dollars to benefit cancer research.
