New investigation of Fort Collins detective OK'd

FORT COLLINS (AP) - A judge has approved re-opening the perjury investigation against a Fort Collins police detective in the case of a man whose murder conviction was overturned.

A judge this week said a special prosecutor can resume his investigation of Lt. Jim Broderick, who helped with the investigation that led to the conviction of Tim Masters. The conviction was overturned last year after new DNA testing.

Broderick has testified he had minimal involvement in the case from 1987 to 1992, but newly uncovered documents showed Broderick may have helped plan surveillance of Masters in 1989.

Masters' attorneys have said Broderick may have lied and conducted illegal eavesdropping. Earlier investigations of Broderick found no wrongdoing, but Buck asked to reopen his inquiry after the new documents surfaced.
