Records fall as temperatures soar

KUSA - Just a week after a major snowstorm, Denver broke a 64-year-old record high Thursday afternoon when the temperature at Denver International Airport hit 77 degrees.

According to 9NEWS Meteorologist Ashton Altieri, the old record for Nov. 5 in Denver was 76 degrees recorded in 1945 and 1916. The new record was set at 1:49 p.m.

Ashton says a combination of sunshine and southwesterly winds in nearly all levels of the atmosphere created the unseasonably warm temperatures on Thursday. Typically highs are in the middle 50s along the Front Range during the first week in November.

Pueblo tied a record on Thursday with 80 degrees and Colorado Springs also tied a record with 73 degrees.

The southwesterly wind pattern is expected to continue through Friday so more records could be broken. The current record high in Denver for Nov. 6 is 79 degrees set in 1934.

The 9NEWS Weather Team is forecasting 78 degrees under sunny skies for Friday.

Somewhat cooler air will arrive by Sunday along with a chance for showers by Sunday evening. Dry weather is then expected to return in time for the Denver Broncos game on Monday night.
