The announcement was made in a statement from the university released prior to a private meeting between athletic director Mike Bohn, Hawkins and the football team.

"(Hawkins) is and will remain the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes," the statement reads. "He will return for his fifth season in 2010."

According to the release, Hawkins will also remain the Buffs' head coach until the end of his contract, in 2012.

Bohn is expected to make a statement following the private meeting. 9NEWS Investigative Reporter Deborah Sherman will provide further coverage on Four O'clock @ 9NEWS.
Colorado is 3-8 this season, with one game left Friday at home against Nebraska. Hawkins is in his fourth season with the Buffaloes and has a 16-32 record.

Firing him would cost the school more than $3 million.
