DOUGLAS COUNTY - The day after the spring storm, the Douglas County School District made the decision to cancel school.

As parents and students received word, many were wondering why the schools were being closed. Others were happy to avoid the slippery, snowy streets.

The reason behind the varying reactions may lie in the fact that Douglas County comprises almost 900 square miles of land and as district spokesperson Whei Wong said, "Many side roads in the eastern and southern portions of our District were in bad shape. More than a dozen bus drivers reported not being able to get out of their homes to drive routes, while others did not even make it home last night after dropping students off."

In the prepared statement Wong added, "Some parts of our District received nearly two feet of snow, while other parts received little. The safety and security of our students is paramount. We did not want to risk having buses in dangerous conditions."

Wong also said the district is trying to find a more effective way to delay and close schools on a regionalized basis.
