Former school board president appears in court
|
BRIGHTON - The former school board president of Brighton Charter School appeared in court Friday morning. ![]() David Mundy, Sr. is facing charges of tampering with a witness and failure to report abuse following a teacher-student sexual relations case. In early February he plead not guilty. He was in court Friday for a motions hearing. Former Brighton Charter School teacher Carrie McCandless was accused of sexually assaulting a male student during a school hiking trip in October of 2006. McCandless has since pleaded guilty to three counts including unlawful sexual conduct, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and tampering with physical evidence. She will spend 45 days in jail and as a convicted sex offender will have intensive supervised probation for five years. Mundy, Sr. did not report the incident to authorities until November 2 after 9NEWS started investigating. McCandless' husband, the school's principal, said Mundy, Sr. waited to tell Brighton police because of questions he had about the initial report and that he never told the school district because he believed district officials already knew, though they did not. Mundy, Sr. is also under fire after his son, David Wayne Mundy Jr., pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault on a child and contributing to the delinquency of a minor while partying with three girls, ages 14-to-16, at his apartment last year. One of the girls was a student. Following requests for his resignation, Mundy, Sr. stepped down from his position in early December of 2006. Mundy Sr.'s trial is scheduled to begin July 18.
