Local moms try to beat national breastfeeding record

DENVER - Dozens of moms came together Sunday in an attempt to break a national record and raise awareness about breastfeeding.

The first ever National Mile High Breastfeeding Celebration drew moms and dads and several hungry kids.

"It's not something you see everyday and the hope today is that we will promote the idea that breastfeeding is the normal way to feed children," said Jennifer Weddig, professor of nutrition at Metro State.

For parents like Megan and Sean Bennett, the event was certainly not their first time feeding their daughter Marcella in public, but it was the first time they felt so comfortable doing it.

"It's fabulous to see all these other woman breastfeeding," Megan Bennett said.

"I'm excited that everybody's out here willing to do it and not be self conscious," added Sean.

Nearly 200 moms showed up for the event. It was not enough to break the national record of 1,100 set in California in 2002, but it is a state best by far.

"Whether we break the record or not is a little irrelevant, in the fact we just want people to be able see the normalcy of feeding an infant," said Weddig.
