Students go green at CSU, not just because it's a school color

FORT COLLINS - All the Colorado State University alumni out there probably know there are dorms on campus that have special floors, like the honors floor and the substance-free floor, but they may not have heard of this one.

It's called the "Live Green" floor. It opened this semester, and it's in Summit Hall.

It works off a saying that goes, "The frog does not drink up the pond in which it lives."

So all 21 students on the floor recycle all they can. The floor also has a composting program.

Aside from the day-to-day green routine, the floor occasionally goes on field trips. Recently, the group went to visit a wind farm.

Most of the students signed up to be on this floor and all of them are now involved.

"Everybody has the same eagerness as I do," said Freshman Brittany Ricketts, "(and they're) very excited about this new generation of students who are willing to create a sustainable nation and are really eager to get out there and to put our foot out and be like, 'This is what we're doing.'"

The floor's resident assistant, Faye Hornyak, said, "I have a feeling it will expand. Not just in Summit, but, hopefully, throughout the whole CSU campus."

On the green subject, CSU made its largest purchase of renewable energy in the university's history recently.

Housing & Dining Services spent more than $32,000 to deliver "green" electricity to all of its common areas, including dining halls and study lounges.
