Little boy says he knows 'How to Talk to Girls'
|
CASTLE ROCK - Learn to read, learn to write. That's the mandate from teachers throughout Colorado. In their classrooms, students talk about character development and good story telling. ![]() Little boy says he knows 'How to Talk to Girls' In Mrs. Dupree's 3rd grade class at Soaring Hawk Elementary School in Castle Rock students are encouraged to be "observers of the world" and to zoom in on "small moments" and then write about them. One student used Mrs. Dupree's tips to write a short book that really caught her eye. She liked it so much, she shared it with the principal and they decided to share it with the school, selling it at the book fair. Within days, 8-year-old Alec Greven became an author known school-wide. His book titled, "How to Talk to Girls" is getting rave reviews. Classmate Stephen Falvey calls it "Fun and engaging." Savannah Morris added, "I think a lot of stuff is very true in it." In seven very brief chapters, Alec addresses the issue of crushes and how to deal with them. He says, "'How to Talk to Girls is kind of like a theory'" based on his observations, mostly on the school playground. Alec makes special note of the various types of boys and girls he's studied in class and at recess. He says pretty girls are the ones who wear earrings, fancy shoes and dresses nearly every day. Alec says many boys get crushes on pretty girls, but his book explains, "Sometimes you get a girl to like you and then she ditches you. Tip: about 73 percent of regular girls ditch boys, 93 percent of pretty girls ditch boys." Alec is quick to explain his observations. "It's not around the whole world. I have no idea what the world stats are, but this is around Soaring Hawk," he said. Other useful thoughts shared in his book: Don't be a class clown. If you're the smartest boy in the class, girls will be prowling at your feet; and if a girl ditches you, move on, life is hard. Alec is already working on his second book appropriately called "How to Talk to Girls Part Two." His first book has raised about $300. All of the money is going to a school fund for a new track outside the school. To find out more, click here. (Copyright KUSA*TV. All rights reserved.)
