Nude bikers plan to fill streets in protest Saturday night
|
DENVER - How far would you go to make a statement about the price of gas? A local group plans to bare it all in the Mile High City on Saturday night to protest oil prices. ![]() They call themselves the Naked Bikers but they also rollerblade and skateboard to make their point about climate change the nation's dependence on oil. Saturday night is the second annual World Naked Bike Ride in Denver. These rides take place around the country and the world. And, considering the ride is planned for 9 p.m. on a busy Saturday night in Denver, the bikers are sure to get plenty of stares. Organizers say a lot more people will participate this year, with 100 to 200 people expected, as compared to 25 last year. The nude bikers will be taking up one to two lanes of traffic, so expect things to slow down around them. A similar protest took place in Boulder last month. Protestors say they don't mean to offend anyone, they just want to call attention to our nation's dependence on oil and the resulting wars and global warming. The riders have slogans like "burn fat, not oil." Organizers are not saying exactly what route riders will be taking through Denver. However, they are supposed to leave from Benedict Park, which is at 21st and Tremont Place. The ride is expected to last about an hour and a half. Organizers say they plan to make sure everybody obeys traffic laws. Organizers say last year 20 of the 25 riders were issued tickets for indecent exposure or for disturbing the peace. However, they say those tickets were dismissed when some of the riders starting fighting them in court. (Copyright KUSA*TV, All Rights Reserved)
