Its new hours have started. The post office at 7500 E. 53rd Place is now open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. It will be closed on Sundays and holidays.

The post office plans to install a self-service automated postal center that will be open at all times.

The Postmaster General John Potter told a Congressional subcommittee this week that the postal service will run out of money if it doesn't get some help.

It already faces a nearly $5 billion deficit. Potter says demand for its services has gone down significantly while operating costs have gone up.

He asked the House panel for permission to cut mail delivery down from six to five days a week. He says that could save three and a half billion dollars a year.

No decision about the request was made.
