The deceased officer has been identified as Jay Sheridan, according to the Limon Police Department. Sheridan had been with the force for more than six years.

"Jay was an outstanding officer and will be greatly missed by his fellow officers and colleagues," said Limon Police Chief Lynn Yowell.

Sheridan and other officers and deputies were serving a fugitive warrant at the Limon Mobile Home Park shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday. Police say when officers tried to serve the warrant, the suspect shot and killed Sheridan.

Police say the fugitive, who has not been named, then barricaded himself inside his trailer. Two other officers were also inside.

Neighbors were evacuated and numerous agencies responded. Around 10:40 p.m. SWAT officers went inside the trailer and discovered the suspect dead. He had apparently shot himself. The two officers inside with him were unharmed.

This incident remains under investigation by the 18th Judicial District Critical Response Team.
