FEDERAL HEIGHTS - Investigators say they now know what started a fire at a mobile home that sent five people to the hospital Saturday.

At 6:53 a.m., the Federal Heights Fire Department got a 911 call that there was a fire in the 2000 block of 92nd Street at the Holiday Hills mobile home park.

Fire investigators say the fire was caused by one of the residents in the mobile home smoking while using an oxygen tank.

Warning signs asking people not to smoke inside the home were posted on their front door.

When firefighters arrived, they say there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the mobile home.

Federal Heights Police officers pulled one elderly woman who was trapped on the back porch away from the home, and three firefighters pulled an elderly man out of the home.

Neighbors say they tried to warn the couple not to smoke inside their home.

"I said, 'Why are you smoking on oxygen?'" neighbor Viola Morse said. "She says 'It don't hurt if you don't have it turned on.'"

It took firefighters about 15 minutes to get the fire under control.

Firefighters say the two victims have critical injuries and they were transported to a local hospital. Three Federal Heights Police officers were also taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation, but they are expected to recover.

Authorities say one dog died in the house, and another dog is now at a local animal shelter.
