WINDSOR - A Windsor baby is in critical condition Tuesday after a mishap in a playpen at a licensed in-home daycare facility on Monday caused the child to go without air for an undetermined time.

Windsor police were called to a home in the 600 block of Buckhorn Mountain Court on Monday at 11 a.m. on a call of an infant not breathing.

When the officer arrived on scene, he found an adult male, Garrett Moore, 35, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on an 11-month-old child.

"He [Moore] had placed the child in a playpen in a bedroom for a nap while he was making lunch for the other kids in the daycare," Windsor Police Chief John Michaels said. "He left the baby for between 30 and 45 minutes, and then he went to check."

The child had trapped her head against the mesh side of the playpen and under the edge of the playpen mattress, and then laid her body weight on top of the mattress, cutting off or restricting her airflow, Michaels says.

Moore, according to the police report, immediately pulled the child out and began performing CPR after calling 911.

The child was airlifted to Medical Center of the Rockies.

Michaels said the daycare is licensed with both the town and the state, and there were 12 children at the daycare at the time of the incident, with Moore as the only adult.

"We are working with the appropriate entities to investigate this incident and determine compliance at all levels," Michaels said.
