"As long as I can keep doing it, I will," Bailey, 94, said.
Now a 12-year veteran with boat racing, Bailey is the senior member of the "senior citizens only" Golden Dragons boat squad, based out of Portland, Oregon. His age trumps every other paddler, competing as the oldest paddler at the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival. The festival, at Sloan's Lake, runs through Sunday.
Every summer, the team travels from one dragon boat festival to another across North America. While Bailey's competitive spirit is high, he admits the goal is not about winning.
"It's the hardest thing you've ever done for three minutes straight," he said. "But see, those other teams are a bit younger than us. So it's more for the fun of it, being with friends, good exercise and a great hobby."
