Greenwood Village Police arrested him Aug. 2 and charged him on Aug. 5.
According to a police report, the 27-year-old was driving drunk and hit a parked car while backing up. He proceeded to leave the scene of the wreck, according to police.
The report says Prater was coming from Shotgun Willy's with a female companion. Prater and the woman tried to get a room at a nearby hotel, but the hotel was occupied. The police later located Prater at a different hotel and interviewed him regarding the incident.
According to the police report, Prater had last consumed an alcoholic beverage at 7 p.m. during dinner. Prater mentioned being "very tired from his long day at training camp."
When asked why he did not stop after hitting the car, Pater said it was because many witnesses to the wreck were being confrontational with him. Police conducted a field sobriety test and say he failed the test.
He's set to make a court appearance in early October.
The Broncos released the following statement regarding the incident: "Our organization is disappointed with the poor judgment shown by Matt Prater on Aug. 2. This matter, which was addressed with the team last week, continues to be thoroughly reviewed internally."
