AURORA - Police have arrested a Department of Corrections officer who said he had been drinking and had taken Vicodin before he got behind the wheel of a car and then allegedly caused an accident that sent a three-person family to the hospital.
Aurora Police say 38-year-old Jason Ashley Ulrich faces charges in connection with the crash that happened on Saturday morning.
Police believe Ulrich was going 75 mph in a 45 mph zone on Smoky Hill Road near Riviera Way before crossing over the median and hitting a Honda Pilot. They say at least two witnesses had called 911 before the wreck to report his erratic driving.
Jonathan and Diane Price were inside the Pilot with their 2-year-old. All three were sent to Littleton Adventist Hospital. Diane Price and the toddler were released from the hospital Saturday. Jonathan was listed in serious condition on Thursday night.
Police say they got results back from Ulrich's blood that showed his blood alcohol content .252. The legal limit in Colorado is .08. Investigators say more tests are being done to confirm if any drugs were in his system at the time of the accident.
Ulrich was arrested on Thursday without incident and was taken to the Aurora City Jail, according to police. He faces charges of vehicular assault relating to the alcohol and vehicular assault relating to reckless driving. He was expected to post a $50,000 bond on Thursday evening.
