KUSA - The numbers are staggering, nearly 49 million Americans are what's called "food insecure." What's worse is more than 16 million of them are children. That's according to U.S. Department of Agriculture.

According to Hunger Free Colorado, food banks are reporting a record number of families needed emergency assistance. The organization also says more than 900,000 Coloradans are at risk of hunger and 25% of Colorado families don't have enough food to meet their basic needs.

Hunger Free Colorado is partnering with 9CARES Colorado Shares to help get food to those who need it most.

Kathy Underhill stopped by the 9NEWS studio Friday morning where she said hunger is a solvable problem. Watch the attached video for more.
