BOULDER - Two sheriff's badges and two guns were among the items stolen from the home of a Boulder County Sheriff's deputy early Wednesday morning.
The Boulder County Sheriff's Office told 9NEWS the deputy came home about 2:30 a.m. and reported his house was broken into.
The deputy lives in the townhomes in the 2800 block of Rock Creek Circle in Superior.
Cmdr. Rick Brough with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office says the deputy also reported missing his utility belt that had a stun-gun on it, his radio and two personal computers. One of the handguns, a .45 caliber pistol, is a weapon the deputy uses for work, Brough says.
Brough couldn't say if the home was targeted for the specific items that were stolen. The deputy does not take a car home. Brough says he believed the burglar or burglars entered through the back door, but couldn't say if the door was unlocked or there was a forced entry.
"They might have gone in, saw a portable radio that's very obviously a police radio, then they start digging around for guns and badges and so forth," Brough said.
According to Brough, the one of the badges that were stolen was a 150th anniversary badge that has the deputy's number on it - 584.
"You're always concerned about police impersonators, especially when you're talking about pieces of a uniform," Brough said. "People always recognize a badge right away, as belonging to police. You have a badge that's stolen, that's always concerning."
Investigators are looking into what happened. The officer has not been put on leave.
The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information to call Det. Andy Smith at 303-441-3650, or contact Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. You can also submit tips www.nococrimestoppers.com. You may be eligible for a cash reward.
