GREELEY - An 11-week-old Boxer named Gingerbread is getting a second chance

After our initial story about Ginger aired on 9NEWS at 4 o'clock, several people called the Denkai Animal Sanctuary to help out.

"We received more than eight phone calls this afternoon alone," said Diana Palluck, with the shelter.

Volunteers with the Denkai Animal Sanctuary found Ginger running in Greeley Business Park suffering from a botched tail docking, which is a procedure where a rubber band is wrapped around part of the tail to make it fall off.

According to veterinarians, it is usually done on puppies one to three days old for cosmetic purposes and it can be a very painful process especially for a puppy like Ginger who is much older.

"She cries out in pain when we touch her tail," Denkai Animal Sanctuary representative Floss Blackburn said.

Vets say they will leave the rubber band on Ginger to prevent infection in the live part of her tail. They believe she will be okay but they need to do surgery to remove her tail and put her on antibiotics. The procedure costs a minimum of $200.

Ginger will undergo surgery Tuesday morning. Afterward she will be introduced to her new forever home.

The animal shelter would like to thank everyone who inquired about Ginger and reminds everyone there are still dozens of animals at Denkai looking for a home.
