Jerod Reeves, 29, and Kimberly McCaffery, 35, admitted to FBI investigators they stole money and other items, and even sawed the fingers off the hand of a dead body to get a gun.
The couple skipped town and eventually were arrested in Washington state.
In a jailhouse interview with 9NEWS on Monday, the couple defended their actions.
"Wait until they're out there freezing half to death. Anyone that goes and finds a dead body in the wilderness and sees a freakin' wallet with some cash in it, they're going to take it. I don't care who you are," Reeves said.
The couple had come across the bodies of William Ahrold and his 9-year-old-son Jackson in Grand County on Dec. 17. The Grand County Sheriff's Department believes Ahrold shot and killed his son before killing himself.
When Reeves and McCaffrey stumbled upon the van, they had a hunch something was wrong.
"I kind of got an uneasy feeling. I knew something was wrong. I looked in the van and saw the tarp," Reeves said. "It looked like he had a made a bed for him and his kid [with the tarp]."
Reeves didn't notice Jackson's body until he was about to leave.
"I kept telling Jerod we needed to go, we needed to get out of there," McCaffrey said.
Instead, the couple decided to steal whatever money was in the vehicle. Reeves also decided to cut Ahrold's frozen fingers off so he could get his gun.
"I sawed them off with a hack saw," Reeves said. "That was pretty crazy. I'm not really sure. I should have left that there."
McCaffrey regrets everything that night. Reeves, on the other hand, says he would do it again if he were faced with the same situation.
"I did what I had to do that night to survive," Reeves said.
McCaffrey says the couple was homeless, had no money and was running on fumes.
The couple has been charged with tampering with physical evidence, criminal trespass and abuse of a corpse. They're being held on $150,000 bond.
