BAILEY- It is a tragedy that has shaken an entire community. Police say early Saturday morning, 17 year-old Catrina Fox jumped out of her mother's car while driving down highway 285 near Kipling. Nicki and Cali Shields own a gardening shop in town where Catrina's mother works. When they heard the news, they were devastated.

"The first thing that came to mind was her mom because she works here and I'm really close with her," Cali Shields said.

The Shields describe Catrina as a happy and friendly girl in recent months who was always kind to others, but they admit, she wasn't without her own troubles.

Cali said, "I know she was a little bit troubled and upset about a lot of things. She was in and out of court."

But in the past year, friends say Catrina started turning her life around.

"She started just accepting life how it was and being happy about it. I know she started to talk about plans to move to California and she was so excited," Cali said.

That's why so many in the small community of Bailey are struggling to understand why the teen would do such a thing.

Nicki Shields says she will turn to prayer to help her cope. She will be saying the Serenity prayer because she says it was Catrina's favorite.
