DENVER - Three armed robberies in three weeks doesn't sound like a lot for a major city like Denver - but what got our attention is who the robbers are targeting: tow truck drivers.
The latest victim, Tim Rohac, is owner of Rohac's Junkyard Dogs, a business that buys and tows away junk cars.
Rohac was attacked and robbed by two men around 4 p.m. on Sunday.
He sent 9NEWS a tip because he wants to warn others.
"I buy six to eight cars a day. That's my biggest draw is that I pay cash for junk cars. They called and they said, 'I have an '02 Grand Prix,'" Rohac said.
Rohac went to a house on the 5500 block of Victor Street in Denver's Montbello neighborhood. Instead of finding a Grand Prix, Rohac found two men with a gun.
"They pistol whipped me, hit me twice in the face. And it hurt. The guy kept saying, Don't make me kill you.' I said, 'I got a family, don't kill me,'" Rohac said.
The men tied Rohac's hands behind his back with zip ties, and forced him to lie face down in the snow as they took about $900 - along with his cellphone and pain medication.
"My dog Roxy kept them from stealing the truck, I know. She's very protective of me," Rohac said.
Denver Police confirm two similar armed robberies targeting tow truck drivers, both occurred in mid-January.
Rohac says many of his colleagues now carry less cash.
Some are even buying weapons to defend themselves.
"Those guys are gonna kill someone. If things had gone awry, they would have killed me. It seems to me like they're getting more and more brazen. I got the impression from them, that they enjoyed it," Rohac said.
He and others are now taking safety precautions, but Rohac plans to keep working, even in the Montbello neighborhood where he was robbed.
"This is my living. This is what I do," Rohac said.
Rohac says he got a good look at his attackers.
The first is a black man, six feet tall, 200 pounds, with gold front teeth and gold wire rim glasses. He was wearing a black hoodie and black cargo pants.
The second is a black man, six feet three inches tall, 200 pounds, wearing a black hoodie and black fatigues.
