DENVER - The college student who threw glitter at Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in Denver on Tuesday night was fired from an internship at the Colorado legislature Thursday.

Twenty-year-old Peter Lucas Smith talked with 9NEWS about the glitter-bombing, which he says was intended to show solidarity with gay rights advocates.

Smith is a University of Colorado Denver student and had an unpaid internship working in the press office of the state Senate Democrats.

He worked there 15 hours a week as part of a program called "CU at the Capitol."

Senate Democrats' Chief of Staff John Cevette says he was informed Thursdya that Smith was the person behind the glitter-bombing incident.

Cevette told 9NEWS he fired Smith from the internship within an hour and that his office has no tolerance for this kind of behavior.

Smith was cited by Denver Police for two misdemeanor charges after throwing blue glitter at Romney. Romney was on the Auraria campus for a campaign event following the Colorado caucuses.

In an interview with 9NEWS, Smith said he was worried about potentially being kicked out of school over the incident, but that he had no regrets.
