The Bridge Speaker is an annual event, now in its 18th year at the Auraria Campus. "Bridge" refers to the symbolic bridging of Black History Month in February and Women's History Month in March. The group said they were honored to hear Giovanni share her thoughts about politics, community and her experience in the civil rights movement.
''It could be considered that the second Civil War was not fired with guns but was fought with words. Martin Luther King Jr. would be our Lincoln and he inspired the people and the people were ready," Giovanni said. "There is a Chinese proverb that when the students are ready a teacher will come."
Giovanni says there is still a lot to learn. Prejudice still exists, but she says our country continues to progress.
