Joyce (L) and Donald (R) Schaffer
According to police, a 67-year-old man shot his 69-year-old wife in the Wheat Ridge Manor Nursing Home on Sunday. She was in the nursing home for the past 10 months after breaking her hip. Police say she also was suffering from multiple sclerosis.
"No note [was] found to indicate why this took place," Lisa Spinder with Wheat Ridge Police told 9NEWS. "[There was] nothing to tell police why he decided to do this on this day."
Police later identified the husband as Donald Schaffer and his wife as Joyce Schaffer.
Police say Donald went to the nursing home around 3 p.m. Police got the shots-fired call around 3:13 p.m.
Donald used a handgun to shoot Joyce in the head and then turned the gun on himself. Their family says they did not know Donald owned a gun. Police say the gun was purchased legally.
The couple was married for 43 years.
"They were very much in love and - after being separated for the last several months - we believe they are finally back together," the family said in a statement released Monday.
