Friends closest to Dahl say the biggest tragedy in her life is what ended up killing her.
"She died of a broken heart and probably the stress but you know you never would have known it unless you knew her really, really, deeply," said her close friend Jewel Wellborn.
Sandy Dahl's husband Jason was the captain of United Airlines Flight 93, the plane hijacked by terrorists on September 11, 2001 that later crashed in Shanksville, Penn.
After that tragic day, Dahl's closest friends say she got to work. Sandy made sure there was a memorial where her husband and 40 other people died.
"She went out to Shanksville and made sure that everyone had a true memorial portion. It was important to her," Wellborn said.
Wellborn has known Sandy for nearly twenty years. She says Sandy committed her life to telling the stories of Flight 93 and the heroes on board, but one of Dahl's greatest passions was a scholarship fund she created in her husband's honor.
"She thought it would be wonderful if she could build a scholarship fund to the point where it would memorialize Jason forever and provide his dream of flying to other students," Wellborn said.
The scholarship fund went national for the first time, giving ten scholarships to students from around the nation. In the past ten years, the organization has awarded more than 50 scholarships.
Wellborn says Sandy was the most selfless person she has even known.
"She would put on the face, she would go and she would tell you that she was there to make sure the memories of those 9/11 victims were not forgotten."
Wellborn says Dahl will be remembered as a woman with tremendous strength, kindness, and someone who believed the world could be changed with love.
The Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund's website issued the following statement Friday evening:
"It is with a deep sense of sadness that the Captain Jason M. Dahl Scholarship Fund announces the passing of Jason's widow Sandra Dahl. Sandy passed away in her sleep this morning from natural causes near Denver Colorado. Sandy was instrumental in the creation of the Dahl Fund following the tragic events of 9-11, and her guiding light will be missed. The thoughts and prayers of the Dahl Fund go out to Sandy's friends and family at this very difficult time in their life."
