Company spokesman Steve Owen tells The Pueblo Chieftain the layoffs affect 18 employees at its Bent County Correctional Facility and 36 at the Crowley County Correctional Facility in Olney Springs. He says the workers can transfer to other facilities.
Owen says a year ago, Corrections Corporation of America was housing nearly 3,900 inmates in its Colorado facilities. He says the Colorado Department of Corrections' current budget reflects that the state will only need 3,300 beds for inmates going forward.
The prisons will stay open with about 600 employees.
Bent County Commissioner Lynden Gill says the community is still reeling from losing 206 jobs with the closure of the state-run Fort Lyon prison.
