Michael Stillman Maher was contacted by a fire chief Saturday night while driving a silver Toyota Tacoma with government plates. He allegedly produced fake credentials and drove away on County Road 52E.
Maher was later spotted inside the fire area in Laporte and pulled over. Authorities say the government license plate was stolen.
The plate was traced back to the Glenwood Springs area. Police also found stolen property in the vehicle and a firearm.
Maher faces charges of impersonating a firefighter, theft, obstructing fire/police and attempting to influence a public servant.
He is being held at Larimer County Jail.
