Court documents show both co-workers and family members suspected 44-year-old Rhonda Eisenberg was the mother of the then 17-year-old's baby. But it took a tip to police, just days ago, to get this investigation started.
Rhonda Eisenberg was booked into Weld County Jail Tuesday afternoon after police said she admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student while he lived with her in 2010.
"This is a longtime teacher with the district," said Roger Fiedler, director of communications at Weld County District 6. "She's been with the school district 6 here in Greeley since 1991, so I think we're just all dealing with the shock of that news."
"We were notified by the Greeley Police Department Monday," Fiedler said. "An investigation began last weekend. Tuesday morning, [we were] notified of an arrest, [and we] put her on administrative leave. She was a Spanish language teacher, [and has] been with our district since 1991. For the first 10 years, she taught at Heath Middle School. [Since 2000, she has] been a Spanish language teacher at Northridge High School. This alleged relationship occurred during the summer of 2010."
Court documents detail that Eisenberg petitioned for guardianship of the boy when his parents went to Mexico. Eisenberg wrote that she spoke with the boy's mother and everybody involved agreed it was the best course of action.
They lived together from June to September 2010.
"She confirmed that a 17-year-old had been living with her, that they had an intimate relationship," said said Lt. Carl Alm, spokesman for the Greeley Police Department.
She also told police she was the mother of the teenager's child.
Eisenberg is being held on a $50,000 bond. The judge told her if she were to bond out of jail, she would not be allowed to have contact with anyone under the age of 18 unless it's her children.
During her court appearance on Wednesday, she told the judge, "I just want to go home to my children. I just want to see my kids." She added, "I'm not a bad person."
Court documents show she is divorced and went through a custody battle for her two children in 1998.
Eisenberg does not have a prior criminal record.
