The explosives were placed in a dump truck lined with sand and escorted by police and fire crews to an area just east of Aurora.
Authorities counter charged the material by exploding the chemicals and then placed the remains in a trench where diesel fuel was poured on top and ignited.
According to the ATF, this process burned up any explosive material that remained.
Police say samples of the material found in Holmes' apartment was taken as evidence.
Holmes is accused of barging into a crowded movie theater and shooting into the crowd. Twelve people died and 58 others were injured.
