He was hit by an alleged drunk driver.
Now, on Labor Day weekend, police from a different department are doing something special for the fallen officer.
Saturday night in Thornton, officers set up a DUI checkpoint, in the name of officer Bitner. Their goal is to make sure every driver is sober and save lives.
Jeremy Bitner is described as an officer who was excellent at DUI Enforcement.
"We're dedicating this checkpoint tonight to the fallen Englewood Police Officer Jeremy Bitner who was killed by a DUI driver during another holiday weekend so we picked this holiday weekend to memorialize him," Sgt. Matt Cabot with the Thornton police department said.
"On behalf of Jeremy's family and his co-workers and the Englewood Police Department, we appreciate this gesture," Englewood police officer Matt Mander said.
"We're slowly healing. It is still hard," Mander said. "It's just things like this working together is going to get us through it."
"Any and every drunk driver you get off the street could potentially be saving somebody's life and that's the way we look at," Mander said.
Connor Donahue, 20, has been charged for Bitner's death.
