The Romney-Ryan plan in a nutshell aims to reduce the deficit and tax rates at the same time. The campaign aims to accomplish this by eliminating some tax exemptions, but has not specified the exemptions that it would seek to end.

"The Simpson-Bowles commission proposed a similar process of lowering tax rates and plugging loopholes even more than what the Romney-Ryan plan does," Ryan said in the interview.

When pressed to specify which "loopholes" are in play, Ryan didn't name any, though he did suggest that the exemptions being targeted would affect wealthier taxpayers more.

"It's really who gets [the exemptions]," Ryan said. "Should higher income individuals be able to write off so much of their income from taxation? We don't think so. We want to have an exhaustive search through the tax code in the front of the public view, with Congress."

Ryan also answered questions submitted by 9NEWS viewers on birth control, limited government, and a statement he made about his marathon running time, which Ryan says was an honest mistake.
