South Metro Fire Department Public Information Officer Becky O'Guin, who is on scene of the fire, said there was heavy smoke coming from all sides of the house.

When firefighters initially arrived on scene they found fire activity in the basement. The fire spread to other areas of the home and firefighters were forced to evacuate and continue attacking the fire from the exterior of the home, O'Guin said

The homeowner called 911 just before 4 a.m. to report the fire and was able to make it safely out of the house on his own.

As of 5:30 a.m. the fire was declared under control, but firefighters remained on scene putting out hot spots.

When the fire is declared official out fire investigators will begin investigating the cause of the fire.
