Amtrak says the body of 69-year-old Charles Dowd was discovered by a railroad worker Friday morning.
Dowd left Emeryville, Calif. September 12 but never arrived at his destination in Chicago two days later.
Amtrak says a passenger on the train saw Dowd standing near a train door the night of Sep. 13. Another passenger later found an exterior door ajar around 11 p.m. the same night.
Investigators and family members searched for Dowd in eastern Colorado and western Nebraska.
In a statement on the family's Facebook page, relatives say they're devastated but thankful to those who helped search. Family member Sheila Stevens confirmed the information in an interview, saying details would be released later.
