Detective John White says the shooting was sparked after a series of fights between a large group of people near 11th Avenue and Broadway.
"During that large physical altercation our suspect produced a weapon and fired and struck our victim. We are aware this is a heavily traveled area because of bars and restaurants," White said.
The victim was rushed to the hospital where he later died.
Police say the altercation happened at around 1:20 a.m. just before the bars closed.
Police say they realize there's a likelihood these types of crimes can happen so they continue to patrol the area and are ready to respond.
They believe that's the reason they were able to locate and arrest the suspect who has been identified as 24-year-old Marvin Joel Rozario-Lopez. The suspect faces first-degree murder charges in the case. A background check on Rozario-Lopez shows an arrest in August 2007 on drug charges and again in May for drug possession and distribution.
Crimes in the Capitol Hill area aren't unusual. On Friday morning Denver police responded to an incident near 13th and Pennsylvania where a man was fatally stabbed.
In January 2011 a valet was killed near 8th Avenue and Lincoln Street after a woman hit him and took off. In September of the same year, police responded to a fatal shooting on 8th and Broadway.
