On Saturday, Amy and Brian Christian promised their new son he was not going anywhere. Sebastian's adoption was finalized and the three legally became what they had already been for months – a family.

Sebastian was one of seven children in Jefferson County, and one of dozens of children across the state, whose adoptions were finalized last week as part of National Adoption Day.

Adoptive families, caseworkers, child advocates and others gathered at the Jefferson County Combined Court to celebrate the day. The Jefferson County Department of Human Services has seen 47 adoptions finalized so far this year.

"Adoption isn't an event, it isn't a day, it's a promise you'll make over a lifetime," Chief Justice Michael Bender told guests before the hearings began.
